MSNBC Cancels Joy Reid’s Show in Major Programming Shake-Up

Joy Reid’s evening news program on MSNBC is being canceled as part of a major programming overhaul led by the network’s new president, Rebecca Kutler, according to sources familiar with the changes.

The final episode of Reid’s 7 p.m. show, The ReidOut, is scheduled to air this week. The show, known for in-depth interviews with politicians and key newsmakers, has been a staple of MSNBC’s lineup for the past five years.

MSNBC plans to replace Reid’s program with a panel show featuring three co-hosts: Symone Sanders Townsend, a political commentator and former Democratic strategist; Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee; and Alicia Menendez, a television journalist. The trio currently co-hosts The Weekend, which airs on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

An MSNBC spokesperson, Richard Hudock, declined to comment, as did Reid.

This programming shift is the first significant change under Kutler’s leadership, who took over as network president this month. She has been working on a new lineup to boost MSNBC’s ratings, which have consistently outperformed rival CNN but remain behind Fox News, the long-time ratings leader.

Additional major changes are expected at MSNBC. In January, the network’s most well-known anchor, Rachel Maddow, resumed hosting her 9 p.m. show five days a week for the first 100 days of the Trump administration after previously scaling back to Mondays only. Initially, the network had announced that Alex Wagner, who hosted the 9 p.m. show four days a week, would return at the end of April.
